The
Swedish Vallhund is an active, intelligent and clownish dog with a friendly
temperament. This breed requires an owner who is prepared to be the pack
leader. Strong consistent leadership will reward the owner with a very
loyal companion. Originally developed for their herding ability, Swedish
Vallhunds today are primarily kept as household pets. However, given the chance
to be trained with stock they step up to the challenge readily. They still make very
good farm dogs as it is an inherited trait to enjoy herding. They also love the discipline of obedience and agility training and
competition. Understandabley they are known as very versatile little
dogs. One of the most noticable features of this breed is that they have either a curled spitz tail, or are born naturally bobbed.
Vastgotaspets
(as they are called in Sweden) prefer the company of their human pack over just
about anything else. They do well fitted with other dogs, and particularly do
well with other Swedish Vallhunds. They are a robust, hardy breed but not
suitable for everyone. We are lucky to have Swedish Vallhunds, not only in New Zealand, but worldwide as they came very close to extinction. Their origins can be traced back some 8 to 9 hundred years. But during world war II their numbers has so badly declined that a rescue was initiated by a couple of dog enthusiasts and the breed restablished from just a handful of dogs. ![]() | We are proud to own and breed rare Swedish Vallhunds Our focus is to promote this lovely and ancient spitz breed in NZ Puppy enquiries welcome. |
